| The words mentor, consultant,
teacher and coach are used synonymously in today’s
world; however, there is a big difference in the
meaning of these terms. That difference can mean
the difference between you creating the practice
and life of your dreams and spinning your wheels.
- A mentor is generally an expert in his field
who knows the work and can guide someone to move
forward within the context of the industry.
- A consultant is someone who shares information
and expertise, and suggests ideas and strategies
for change. The best consultants customize their
advice based on your individual circumstances
and objectives.
- A teacher is someone who guides by providing information and knowledge. While a teacher may encourage development, the teaching process does not guarantee it. The learning needs to be implemented, i.e., become "self-active."
Coaching is more about the relationship.
Coaching asks for change and growth, as well as
informing and guiding. A coach expects much from
you. A coach pushes you into action when you might
not push yourself. There is not necessarily a higher
or lower relationship between client and coach –
it’s more interdevelopmental. It goes beyond interdependence
to a new level of growth and development. Coaches
move clients forward by helping to develop them.
The irony is that the most successful dentists are
the ones who enter the coaching relationship with
their patients and staff. The irony is that
the most successful dentists are the ones who
enter the coaching relationship with their patients
and staff.
The Academy of Dental Leadership provides dentists
with the skills they need to become great coaches.
We do this through various services:
One on One Coaching – For those
who want to have their own personal coach. Not
only will you develop yourself and practice but
naturally grow into a coaching relationship with
your practice team, patients, and others in your
life.
Group Coaching – Groups of 5
to 6 dentists or staff members come together regularly.
The group members are accountable to one another.
They expect much of each other. They support and
push each other to move ahead in self-active development.
Mastermind Groups – Groups of 4 to 10
dentists meet regularly to discuss their issues
and brainstorm solutions. This isn’t exactly coaching
but a great way to place difficult issues into
context. New groups open monthly. Group Coaching
may be the next natural step.
Teleseminars – Learn the coaching
skills that great coaches use. Teleseminars are
based on a teaching model rather than a coaching
model. These are a great introduction to the benefits
and methods of coaching. If you are not sure you
would benefit from coaching, here’s a way to get
your feet wet and find out. Participants report
being highly energized after each teleconference
session.
Books and Newsletters – The best
selling book The Art of the Examination
and the newsletter Dental Life provide
the context for one of the most important coaching
arenas in dentistry. Become a better leader through
the examination process. The Academy of Dental
Leadership provides the best of resources to become
a great leader and a great coach.
Consulting – Our in-house consultants
will provide the expertise to take you where you
need to go, according to the priorities you discover
with their assistance. They will learn about you
and your practice in depth. Based on the vision
you have for your preferred future, they will
help you realistically evaluate where you are
now and recommend the changes required to move
you toward your vision. If you discover you would
like the services of a coach to help get you there
faster, you have that option. Our consultants
are all trained coaches who will care deeply about
your success.
